How to Donate Breastmilk After an Infant Loss

NEW RESOURCE!

Lactation Support for the Bereaved Mother. Dealing with the
death of an infant is one of the most difficult situations in life. Each mother needs support
to work through her grief in her own way. One aspect of neonatal loss that is often
overlooked is lactation management and options, including stopping milk production
and continuing to express and donate the milk. For many mothers milk donation to a
HMBANA milk bank has brought some comfort during a very difficult time. The
Human Milk Banking Association of North America (HMBANA) has produced a toolkit to
help healthcare providers provide an environment that facilitates optimal healing,
which may include milk donation. The list of resources and websites that deal specifically
with bereavement and lactation is invaluable. The toolkit is available at www.hmbana.org.
