A Premarital Counseling Conversation

Relationships & Finances: The Importance of Talking About Money
relationships and financesA relationship starts with love, trust, and attraction. Unfortunately, many relationships end because of money. When in a relationship, it is necessary to talk about money as a way to strengthen and deepen your commitment to each other.
By integrating the conversation of relationships and finances openly and honestly from the beginning, relationships are much more likely to survive the long haul.
We each have expectations for our partners including honesty, respect, and an equal say in joint decisions. Many of these decisions involve money: buying a car; getting a new job; renting or buying a home; insurance and financial planning; vacations; saving more; and spending less.

If one person makes these decisions without agreement from the other, the balance of the relationship is lost.

Dealing with money is a daily occurrence in our lives. If we are not able to think or talk – without stress – about this major aspect of daily life, the weight of unspoken words will weigh on the relationship. The number one cause for ending a relationship is lack of communication. That’s why it’s so important to integrate both relationships and finances into your normal course of conversation as often as is appropriate. In many ways, fighting about money is better than not talking about it at all; at least some basic communication is happening.
Instead of arguing, learn – as a couple – how to talk about money. Keeping your relationship healthy and strong is worth the effort, and you will usually better-off financially and emotionally.
