Torrey Pines State Beach and Park
Torrey Pines State Reserve is located within the San Diego city limits and yet remains on of the wildest stretches of land on our Southern California coast. It consists of 2000 acres of land that remains much as it was before San Diego was developed, with the chaparral plant community, the rare and elegant Torrey Pine trees, miles of unspoiled beaches, and a lagoon that is vital to migrating shorebirds. We will scan the salt marsh for waterfowl, shorebirds, and Osprey. In the sage scrub and Torrey Pine areas, we will look for California Quail, Wrentit, Blue-gray and California Gnatcatchers, and others. We will meet, NOT at the Park entrance by the beach, but at the Park and Ride by I-5. (See the directions.) Restrooms at the beach parking area.
Directions: From I-5 take the Carmel Valley Road exit and go west to the first stoplight at Sorrento Valley Road. Turn left into the Park and Ride parking lot. Initially, we will bird along Sorrento Valley Road south to the wastewater pump station (depending on water levels in the marsh). Later, after returning to our cars at the parking lot, we will drive west on Carmel Valley Road toward the Reserve entrance (a parking fee may be required here if the free spots are filled), and later continue on to the Reserve Extension at the end of Del Mar Scenic Parkway.
